Are you a Copycat Vocalist?

I was reading an article on the web recently by a vocal coach (his name fails me) who said he was tired of singers who try to imitate other singers.  He described it as psuedo-singing, psuedo meaning when something appears to be something that it is not.   In other words, false!

Having taught many singers over the last 10 or so years, this rang true with me.

Many new singers make the mistake of  trying to imitate what they hear but don't understand the technique required to achieve it.  It's one thing to want to sing like Beyonce, Karen Clark or Kim Burrell, but it is completely different  to understanding and learning the technique they use to achieve those runs and tone.
As a result of singers imitating what they hear only,  many put unnecessary stress on the voice resulting in painful strained and dry vocals, which could lead to damage.

If you are a new vocalist, the first thing to understand is that we are all different anatomically, so your tone will differ from your favourite singer. How you learn a technique may differ too depending on how you learn.

It is ok to use your favourite singer as a bench mark, but remember you have you own voice and tone. Develop and sing in your own voice and tone.  It  will be much easier than imitating and far less stressful on your voice.
